Women's History Month with U.S. Embassy Beijing

This Women’s History Month, Ring of Hope was proud to collaborate with the U.S. Embassy Beijing for a virtual boxing program, a sport that has increased in popularity amongst women in China. The program was led by multi-sport champion Raquel Harris and connected young females across China. This initiative was supported by a federal award from the U.S. Embassy, enabling us to make a global impact.

Empowerment Across Borders

We designed this introductory program to be accessible to prospects, opening seats to women who had never before tried boxing. The session aimed to promote inclusion and adopt a female doctrine of empowerment, using boxing as a powerful catalyst for social transformation.

Inspiration from the Top

Raquel Harris opened the session by sharing her journey of resilience and what it means to be a female in a male-dominated sport, then guided the participants through the fundamentals of boxing, designed for beginners and tailored to engage without the need for equipment:

  • Phase 1 - Footwork Drills: Essential for agility and defense, these exercises helped participants learn to navigate the ring effectively.

  • Phase 2 - Punch Basics: This section introduced the mechanics behind punching.

  • Phase 3 - Defensive Skills: Participants learned how to evade punches.

  • Phase 4 - Combination Creation: Raquel brought it all together, teaching sequences that combined offensive and defensive moves.

Cultural Exchange and Inclusivity

The event also served as a cultural exchange, bringing an American perspective to a Chinese audience, further promoting inclusivity and diversity within the sport. This aspect added another layer to our initiative, emphasizing global unity and mutual respect.
